Governor Andrew Cuomo was in Albany Wednesday, further discussing the state's new gun legislation. Our Nick Reisman has more from the Capitol.

NEW YORK STATE -- Governor Andrew Cuomo clarified his position on gun control while meeting with legislative leaders. This comes after a new Quinnipiac University poll shows the governor's approval rating slipped after signing the SAFE Act into law from 74 percent approval to 59.

Cuomo says he's not surprised in the drop and feels that once gun owners understand the particulars of the law, they will come around and support it as well.

"I understand the sensitivity. I understand the fear. Gun owners hear gun control laws and they’re afraid you’re talking about taking their gun away and you’re talking about the Second Amendment. Many are skeptical about government. They own a gun, they say you’re trying to control my gun. That is not the case with the law we passed," Cuomo said.

This week, Cuomo sent a letter to all lawmakers who voted yes on the measure, telling them they took a politically courageous act and understands the law has taken a political toll on them. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
