ITHACA, N.Y. -- The City of Ithaca will soon begin a major renovation project downtown. Demolition on the Ithaca Commons is set to begin next week.
The new look will feature a wide open pedestrian boulevard from one end to the other, with seating areas on the sides. Most of the sculptures and trees will be removed and space will be available for businesses to sell goods outdoors and for restaurants to have outdoor seating.
City leaders hope the new design will attract more business to the area. Construction is scheduled to run through July 2014.
"People who live and work here are going to have their daily lives impacted by the construction and rightfully so. Whether it is dust or noise or changes in traffic patterns. And we're going to be doing our best to mitigate any kind of nuisance," project manager Michael Kuo said.
A full time public outreach coordinator has been hired to help with communication for the project.
The community is invited to the groundbreaking Monday at noon.
