ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. -- Platinum-selling rapper Ja Rule is set to leave an Oneida County prison today after serving most of his two-year sentence for illegal gun possession.

The rapper, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, has been at the Mid-State Correctional Facility. He was sentenced after police found a loaded semi-automatic gun with the serial number scratched off, hidden in his luxury car.

His sentence is up in Oneida County, but officials say instead of going home, the rapper will be going straight into federal custody for time remaining on a former sentence for tax evasion. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
