Business owners in Syracuse's Armory Square found a mess at their doors Tuesday morning around the time they'd normally be greeting their first customers. A water main break flooded part of the square with several inches of water, and left quite the clean-up job in its wake. Our Sarah Blazonis reports.
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Water levels are way down from where they were Tuesday morning, but crews are still on the scene trying to patch up the roadway where that water main broke a little after 7 a.m.
You can see people walking around, visiting the shops here in Armory Square, many of which say it's business as usual after an unusual start to their day.
"I was serving customers, and then out of the corner of my eye, I saw the road kind of come up and crack and the water started pouring down. All the customers were saying, 'Oh, there's all this water starting to flood the roads.’"
It was water, water everywhere in Armory Square Tuesday morning.
Tess Eller and her customers at Starbucks were among the first to get a glimpse of the damage a water main break left at the intersection of Franklin and Walton streets.
"We looked outside and it was already rushing down, just tons of water -- it filled up really quickly," said Tess Eller, a Starbucks employee.
Crews say the break was likely due to a combination of weather and old age. Water covered sidewalks and got ankle deep in the roadway. But it wasn't what was above that presented the biggest challenges to containing the break, it was what's below.
"Anything in the way for us to work, because a lot of people don't realize there's, you know, gas, electric, telephone, sewers. So it's the stuff working around utilities is basically the hardest part of it," said Paul Trovato, Superintendent of Water.
The water subsided to reveal a buckled and broken roadway. Though it looked like repair work would make getting to some favorite businesses in the square challenging, several said they didn't see immediate damage.
Many, like the MOST, said it would be a normal day -- even if it did begin with some excitement.
"It may be that some visitors have to just enter the Armory from a different way, but they should still be able to come into the museum and enjoy it," said Katie MacIntyre, MOST Director of Marketing and Public Relations.
