ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca School District has agreed to pay thousands of dollars to settle a racial harassment lawsuit.

The district will pay Amelia Kearney $200,000 for harassment and threats of violence suffered by her daughter, who was a student at DeWitt Middle School back in 2005 and 2006. Kearney was initially awarded $250,000 two years ago, but the district appealed because it didn't believe the state Division of Human Rights had jurisdiction over public schools.

The school district will pay $75,000 of the settlement with their insurance carrier paying the rest.
