CORTLAND COUNTY, N.Y. — Thanks to a group of dedicated volunteers at Greek Peak, adults with disabilities are getting the chance to hit the slopes.

Each year, for a week in January, about 10 to 15 adults take ski lessons through the adaptive learning center. The event, called the "Winter Challenge" kicks off Monday.

For each skier, at least three volunteers are needed. Many of the skiers are amputees, like 22-year-old Jordan Oliver. He says the program has given him a new outlook on achieving his goals.

"This program has helped me learn not just how to ski but that I'm able to do many other things," he said. "You meet so many people here that, oh no, you can do this, and I've done this, and you learn from them, I've met so many good people here that it will definitely take me other places because I came here."

Adults who are visually impaired or paraplegic can also participate in the event.

This is the ninth year of the Winter Challenge.
