It’s already been a long flu season, with thousands of cases across the state. Many people are looking for new and different ways to give themselves a boost. Our Elyse Mickalonis talked to people about other options.
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. -- With winter, comes cold and flu season...and doctors are asking everyone to get vaccinated, but some are looking for other ways to fend off the virus
"Even in stores there’s a wide array of different alternative therapies now. Some of them being Sambucol, which is an elderberry syrup that works very well with the flu,” said Abigail Stevens, Ravenwood Gardens owner.
The Otsiningo Winter Farmer’s Market held its first ever Health and Wellness Fair on Saturday, offering up a variety of natural ways to stay healthy.
"Garlic in general is known to boost your immune system. It’s something that if you eat it every day, put it in your diet, it give your immune system something you need to fight colds and the flu,” said Niechelle Wade, Sunny Hill Farm owner.
Another alternative approach is massage therapy. Experts say massages can reduce stress, pain, and do more.
"Massage does boost the immune system. It’s a great preventative measure to take. You don’t want to get a massage when you’re actively sick,” said Liz Herman, Solace Massage Therapy LMT.
Bonnie Ballard, Bonnie Ballard Health Services LMT, added, "Massage releases the lactic acid out of your muscles and helps to get everything flowing, your circulation is improved and you’re flushing the bad out."
Others suggest adding something special to your bath.
"I do recommend bathing either with the detox, kelp and clay in it to get rid of toxins. A warm bath is going to help,” said Stevens. “I do recommend having a better diet too, eating lots of things like cayenne pepper to help break up your sinuses."
Still, vendors say it’s important to talk to your doctor before trying alternative cold or flu remedies, just to be safe.
