If you take a look at the calendar, Wednesday is a special numerical day, 12-12-12. Now 12 small business owners in Corning's Gaffer District are playing off of the unique date. Katie Husband shows us how Twin Tier shoppers could benefit.

CORNING, N.Y. -- There will be a day like no other this week.

"Wednesday is 12/12/12 and we will not have a day that's this special again for 32,161 days until 01/01/01 it comes around again," said Pam Weachock, Market Street Coffee and Tea owner.

And why not do something about it, right?

"So we have to celebrate it," said Weachock.

And the Crystal City has got a plan to do just that.

"There will be twelve businesses, twelve stores that will have twelve specials," said Weachock.

And each will do something a little different.

"So I'm going to take an extra twelve percent off of anything on sale in the store," said Donna Grzesik, Pip's Creativewear Boutique owner.

"We have taken twelve items, they run between fifteen, twenty, twenty-five dollars and everyone of the items for the day, 12/12/12 will be twelve dollars," said Ginny Coon, Imagine That!, owner.

The 12/12/12 promotional event is part of a 'shop small' initiative with the local merchants on Market Street. And it's something, they claim, you can't find in the bigger stores.

"We like to show that we can do fun things. It's fun to come down and shop and be entertained. And we can do fun things that bigger stores really can't do or they don't have the opportunity," said Weachock.

"It is Christmas time and there's a lot of emphasis on that but it's just something that won't come around again and it's something to play off of," said Coon.

The Market Street merchants are hoping events like this will keep shoppers coming.

"An extra twelve percent is, I think, an awesome savings and I think it will be fun. I want to see how many people come out for this," said Grzesik.

The 12 participants in the 12/12/12 event will open and close their doors during regular store hours.
