SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- It's an effort to shine a spotlight on smaller, local retailers. Small Business Saturday encourages shoppers to think beyond the national chains for their holiday gifts.
At stores like Jet Black in Syracuse's Armory Square, shoppers got the chance to check out unique gifts they may not be able to find in local malls. The store's owner says it's nice to get a boost from Small Business Saturday and they have to build on that to keep bringing people in all season long.
"We really have to compete. We have to do the same sales that the department store is doing and make it worth their while to come down here," said Amanda Gold, owner of Jet Black.
Small Business Saturday was launched by American Express back in 2010.
