OSWEGO COUNTY, N.Y. – Soon, Oswego County will be able to release more suspects on bail using electronic monitoring as an alternative to incarceration in the county jail.

The move is part of an effort to cut down on overcrowding and out of county inmate boarding.

Thursday, the legislature approved the initial funding needed to lease ten new electronic monitoring systems. The program will cost about $9 per day, to be paid by the perpetrator, once it is up and running. It costs about $90 per day to board an inmate in another county's facility when the jail is full. But court officials say they'll still follow strict guidelines to determine if it is safe to release a suspect before their case makes its way through the system.

"This isn't a compromise of those things. People who are eligible for pre-trial release or an alternative to incarceration, it simply gives us one more way to keep track of them and to hold them accountable if they should be in violation of their release conditions,” said Oswego County Undersheriff Eugene Sullivan.

During 2012, the county spent over a million dollars housing an overflow of inmates in other county's facilities. Only $100,000 was originally budgeted to cover those costs.

The Sheriff's Department has once again requested $100,000 for 2013. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
